Biography
Julie Gough is a visual artist working predominantly in sculpture and installation art. Her art and
research practice involves uncovering and re-presenting historical stories as part of an ongoing
project that questions and re-evaluates the impact of the past on our present lives. Much of the work
refers to her own and her family's experiences as Tasmanian Aboriginal people and is concerned with
developing a visual language to express and engage with conflicting and subsumed histories. A
central intention of Gough's art is to invite a viewer to a closer understanding of our continuing roles
in, and proximity to unresolved National stories.
The Residency
"My time at Regents Court was fantastic and generous. It provided me an extremely comfortable space to concentrate on making a new work: "LOCUS" for the 2006 BIENNALE OF SYDNEY on PIER 2/3. Without this month long residency I don't understand how I could have achieved the artwork.
Artists, directors, producers, composers, actors etc etc from across the arts field were also staying at the hotel and I am sure made the atmosphere specially inspiring! The caring family and management, yet ample personal space, plus the feeling of quiet luxury provided the perfect space to relax after a big working day."
Favourite plant
The ones that didn't need much watering - and the very mini oranges that I ate!
Where is the work now?
"Locus" is stored in my mum's hay shed in Murrindindi, in rural victoria - I think they might use it for their firewood - unless I get another multiple tea tree INSTALLATION ARTwork opportunity! let me know if you hear of anything!
