KIRSTEN RANN
Writer / Curator

Biography
Based in Melbourne, Australia, Kirsten has curated numerous critically challenging exhibitions nationally and internationally - including for 2003 Melbourne International Arts Festival; 1999 Singapore Arts Festival, the Hungarian National Gallery (Budapest), and is currently working on an exhibition of contemporary Australian art scheduled for Rome in 2008-09.  She has received many grants and awards - including a Creative Fellowship from the State Library of Victoria - and has published numerous essays, articles and reviews on contemporary Australian art, plus a chapter on Chinese-Australian artist Zhong Chen in the book "Unfinished Journeys" (MacMillan Press, 2006).  She is also founding director and curator of "counterpoint", a contemporary exhibition space focussing on conceptual and experimental art projects/installations in Melbourne.

The Residency
"I was interstate and away from distractions and interference, so focussing on work was easier than at home. It was quiet enough to enable concentration, yet busy enough to not feel isolated, and I was rarely, if ever, disturbed.   The apartment provided was a generous size, enabling me to spread my material around the room and sort it all out for the writing process."

"Regents Court often accommodates like-minded, creative people, including the owners, staff and several guests that I happened to know.  So it was nice to catch up with them at the end of the day on the wonderful roof-garden, where lots of people meet and exchange stories.   It's located in a gorgeous area and convenient to many useful things eg. I often used to go walking to Artspace, the AGNSW, the Botanical Gardens and numerous times the MCA to help me think, to see exhibitions and for meetings with various artists."

Gardening Tips
Watering the garden was often a great relief!  It was a great way to get me out into the fresh air and sunshine, only to find myself surrounded by amazing flowers and astonishing views of Sydney and the harbour.  And I loved all the plants, especially the lavender and the delicate white roses.
